About dietary fat and Omega fatty acids

Certain fats in the diet need to be strictly limited as they pose a health risk. These are the so-called. ‘saturated fats’ present in fatty meats, including some pork and chicken products, certain dairy products, and coconut and palm oil. Other fats, such as polyunsaturated fats, are important for maintaining good health. These are known as “Omega fatty acids”. Important in nutrition are Omega-3, Omega-6, Omega-7 and Omega-9. (The Omega number corresponds to its position in the corresponding molecular chain. The practical differences will be briefly explained.)

Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids

They are indispensable for good health. These important nutrients play a role in skin health and hair quality, support the health of the cardiovascular system, influence hormone balance, and some are involved in the development and maintenance of the baby’s brain and nervous system, allowing brain cells to function and communicate. The World Health Organization recommends a minimum intake of omega-3 fatty acids equivalent to 0.5-2% of daily energy intake.

Omega-7

Omega-7 is a monounsaturated fatty acid that is involved in maintaining cardiovascular and muscle health. There is evidence that Omega-7 is involved in weight control and may be helpful in the changes that occur in women as they age.

Omega-9

Omega-9 belongs to a family of unsaturated fats found in some plant and animal fats. Also known as “oleic acid” or “monounsaturated fats”. Omega-9 helps maintain the cardiovascular system.

About vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that aids calcium absorption and normal bone growth and is involved in maintaining immune functions. The skin produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. But if we spend more time indoors or live in a climate zone with minimal sunshine, taking a supplement can be essential for maintaining health.

Many older people don’t get enough sun and have trouble absorbing vitamin D. In recent decades, we have been spending too much time indoors, depriving ourselves of fresh air and healthy sunlight. And remember – it’s not enough to spend just a few minutes outside, exposing just one arm or face to the sun. In addition, most people use creams with a high sun protection factor, which prevent the sun from activating vitamin D production in our body.

Good dietary sources of vitamin D are oily fish, fish oil, egg yolk, butter and liver. However, it would be difficult to obtain sufficient amounts of this vitamin through diet alone, as rich natural sources are rare. This can be especially difficult for vegetarians and vegans. For these reasons, taking a natural supplement can be beneficial.

Vitamin D2 and D3

There are two forms of vitamin D, which differ depending on their origin. In principle, vitamin D2 is plant-based and vitamin D3 is animal-based. When exposed to light, the skin produces vitamin D3.

Vitamin D3 copes more effectively with restoring the required level of vitamin D in the body. Both forms are fully absorbed into the circulatory system. However, the liver metabolizes them differently – it metabolizes vitamin D2 into 25-hydroxyvitamin D2 and vitamin D3 into 25-hydroxyvitamin D3. These two compounds are known as “calcifediol”. Calcifediol is the main circulating form of vitamin D. Both forms, vitamin D2 and D3, are efficiently absorbed and vitamin D2 should not be considered to be of inferior nutritional value. It’s just that vitamin D3 is processed a little more efficiently by the body.
