AQUASOURCE COLLAGEN PLUS – one of our favorite products

That AquaSource Collagen Plus has become one of our favourite products comes as no surprise. Imagine a body with very dry and thin skin, with small atrophied muscles, with fragile brittle bones and nails. These are just some of the signs that can be seen in a person with collagen deficiency (of course, there can be other causes).

It’s no wonder the cosmetics industry adds collagen to many facial moisturisers – no one wants to look older than they are!

Here are some of the promises the cosmetic industry makes to those using collagen-enriched creams:
– increase skin elasticity;
– reduce wrinkles;
– protect against the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays;
– prevent early signs of aging;
– protect the facial skin from roughening.

And so on… The sad truth is that topical application of collagen does not work – the collagen molecule is too large to be absorbed through the skin. Instead, we have to rely on our bodies to synthesize it from the nutrients in our food, but also take collagen in capsule or powder form.

Collagen is the protein present in the greatest abundance in our body – more than 25% of the protein in the human body is collagen. This structural protein is the glue that holds all the elements of the body together. It gives form, strength and integrity to tissues and organs, holding every thing in its place. We need it in every part of the body.

Our skin, nails and hair need it; it is also part of the stem cells that support new hair growth. Joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles and bones need a lot of collagen; what’s more, tendons are 80% collagen.

The intestines also rely heavily on the presence of collagen. Some people add bone broth to their diet because the amino acids it contains are necessary for collagen production.

Nutritionists often recommend collagen to people who are stressed, or have suffered physical trauma, or have digestive problems or discomfort. Its use is also recommended after surgical intervention because of its richness in the amino acids glycine and proline, necessary in the healing process.

Collagen is also gaining popularity among athletes as it contributes to muscle growth and recovery. Other parts of the body where it is especially needed are the eyes, heart and brain.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is another extremely popular ingredient in the cosmetics industry, and rightfully so. It is a naturally occurring polysaccharide (which is a carbohydrate) in the human body. Thanks to its jelly-like structure, it can hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water and, like collagen, our body produces it every day. Large amounts of HC are found in the extracellular spaces of the skin, i.e. between skin cells. Here it provides the moisturizing and fluffy skin of children and young people. It also contributes to tight elastic skin.

The moisture retention that HC contributes to keeps the skin looking youthful, but that’s not the only benefit. HC is also an essential component of synovial fluid, which reduces friction between articular cartilages and acts as a shock absorber, and thus can be helpful for joint stiffness and discomfort and other similar conditions.

Hyaluronic acid is also found in the eyes, where it acts as a lubricant, and this can be particularly beneficial for people suffering from dry eyes.

Our bodies produce it daily, just like collagen. And, of course, they use it, so we have to keep producing it to replenish our stock, just as we have to keep replenishing the stock in the fridge and pantry. As we age, the rate of its synthesis decreases and even by their thirtieth year, some begin to feel a difference in the texture and quality of their skin. By our fortieth year, we are usually only able to synthesize about half the amount we were producing at 18, so any outside help would be helpful.

AquaSource uses only the highest quality collagen from natural sources.
